J&J Truck Equipment (Somerset, Pennsylvania) is a division of Somerset Welding & Steel which was founded in 1958 by Jay Fisher and Jay Hemminger. Sidney Riggs purchased the company in 1972, operating as J&J Truck Bodies & Trailers. In its early years, the business distributed equipment manufactured by Somerset Welding & Steel, was involved in farm equipment and operated a True Value business.

In 1999, Sidney and his sons, Bill and Dan, formed a separate company (J&J Truck Equipment) to fulfill customer needs for specialized truck equipment, installation, parts, service and repair. It focused on equipment used in construction, oil and gas, and government applications.

The business is a full-line truck equipment house that not only distributes products manufactured by its parent company, but is also a distributor for Knapheide, Auto Crane, BOSS, TruckCraft, Thieman, ARE Truck Caps, and other industry manufacturers. It offers the latest technologies in field service crane bodies, air- and hydraulic-operated lubrication service units, hydraulic systems, service bodies, flatbeds and custom dump bodies. J&J is a major installer and servicer of BOSS snowplows.

Service and repair departments provide custom welding and fabrication, such as steel, aluminum and stainless steel. Complete dump and trailer body repair, painting and a variety of other services are offered.

The facility sits on seven acres, with around 60,000 square feet under roof, including an office, showroom, parts department and more than 40,000 square feet of production space. The shop has a high-definition plasma burn table for clean and efficient metal cutting, and a 50-foot downdraft paint booth. Approximately 40 employees work at this location.

Emphasizing quality
J&J has been an NTEA member since 1972 and participates in the Association’s Member Verification Program (MVP), which recognizes distributors and manufacturers for successfully implementing specified business standards and processes. Learn more at ntea.com/mvp.

The company became ISO 9001 certified in 1997, and updated to ISO 9001:2015 early last year — further demonstrating commitment to quality processes. Each body and equipment installation is performed with top-grade materials and employee expertise, which has helped the company become a leading northeastern U.S. truck equipment distributor.

A strong focus on fleets helps the company maintain relationships with National Grid gas and electric provider and Delaware Department of Transportation. J&J also provides natural gas conversions and authorized installations for Landi-Renzo and Altech-Eco. It is a major repair center for CNG vehicles and maintains a time-fill station at its facility.
