NTEA visited Elliott Machine Works Inc. (Galion, Ohio), which produces a custom and option-rich line of service trucks, lube units, water tanks and industrial vacuum tank trucks for U.S. and foreign markets.
The company was founded in 1936 as a partnership between Hursel L. Ekin and Paul Elliott. At the time, the plant was located in Chenoa, Illinois, and manufactured machine parts for cylinders, hoists and split shaft power takeoffs.
In 1963, the business was acquired solely by Hursel and moved to Galion, where it began producing mobile service equipment. Five years later, a corporation was formed with Hursel as chairman of the board and his son Richard as secretary/treasurer and president. Richard’s son Brad joined in 1989 as sales associate and now serves as secretary/treasurer. Richard’s youngest son Brent joined the family business in 1999 as plant manager and worked his way up to president. This represents three generations of family ownership and management, and they’re working on a fourth, as Brad’s son Zane is employed in the shop as a welder and painter.

Brad gave a tour of the newest plant, built in the industrial park in 2005. The engineering department uses the latest 3-D CAD engineering technology, and the shop has a fabrication department, welding and assembly areas, and a 50-foot downdraft paint booth, where all fabricated materials are prepped, primed and acrylic-urethane top-coated.
Numerous custom units were underway during the tour. Bodies are built from high-strength steel with structural steel undercarriages. Enclosed van sections are steel and/or aluminum construction, and cabinets are 12 ga. construction with stainless steel hinges. Elliott products feature tanks up to 6,000 gallons, Graco pneumatic lubrication pumps, load-sensing hydraulic systems and positive displacement fuel pumps.
Since 1948, Elliott Machine Works has supplied thousands of units for export, the military and federal government, as well as the general service and support industry. The company’s quality assurance program ensures mobile service units will be the foundation of customers’ preventative maintenance programs for years to come.
